Keep Children Safe

The Crime Analysis Unit at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has released their findings involving attempted abductions during the school year. This data is based on 403 confirmed attempted abductions across the US during a period from February 1, 2005 to July 31, 2006. It shows that approximately 60 percent of attempted abductions occur when a child is going to and from school or school related activities

39% of the 403 attempts occurred between 2:00pm and 6:00pm- the time frame when children are out of school and are least likely to be supervised. They found that the children were between the ages of 10 and 14 and happen to more female children then male. 70 % of the attempted abductions involved the suspect driving a vehicle.

Children are now taught to be more aware of the surroundings and what to do if someone grabs them. Of the 403 confirmed incidents 60 % of the children said they yelled, kicked and were able to pull away from their abductor. 30% were able to walk away or run from the suspect. And 10% said either a Good Samaritan or a parent became involved in rescuing the child.

With this information, law enforcement and parents can be more proactive as we continue to fight the issue of child abduction.
